This 1622 masterpiece by Gerard van Honthorst is a beautiful Christmas-day portrayal of Jesus' birth.

The newborn babe is glowing with heavenly light, illuminating primarily Mary's face, but also that of Joseph and some of the shepherds. Mary is centered, with a content smile, laying the child Jesus down to rest. The shepherds, on the left, are rejoicing over the good news. Joseph prays silently on the right. Most of the image is dark, which contrasts sharply with Jesus' light.
