This artwork from Heaven has an incredibly fascinating story. Dating back to 1531, this image converted approximately 10 million indigenous to Catholicism.

A self-portrait of Mary, this artwork has more symbolism and meaning than could be unpacked in a thousand books. Significantly, the symbolism is mostly specific to the indigenous peoples. Her leg is raised, in a traditional dance, crushing satan. Her hair is loose, indicating that she is a virgin. The black ribbon indicates that she is with child, together with the loose hair she is a virgin and a mother. The colors of her mantle and tunic indicate royalty and the heavens. Her hands are clasped in prayer. She is clothed with the sun, both an allusion the lady of Revelation and to her dominance over the Aztec sun god. Likewise, she stands on the moon. They believed that the angels bore sacrifices to the gods, and so Mary is placed on an angel as a sacrifice herself. Likewise, only royalty were carried by the shoulders, and so Mary's royalty is indicated.

Make your home a cathedral - a place consecrated to and conquered by Mary - with Our Lady of Guadalupe.
