This ancient devotion, dating back to some time between 800 and 1200 A.D. was popularized in the late 1800s by the Redemptorists at the behest of Pope Pius IX.
This gold-backed icon depicts Our Lady holding the child Jesus slightly forward, as if offering Him to the viewer, whom she looks at directly. On either side of her are angels. She is clothed with a robe reminiscent of the night sky, with an eight-pointed star on her head.
