This oil-on-canvas artwork was created in 1883 by Pedro Américo.
Also known as Our Lady of Sorrows, Mary is depicted as a witness to the Passion of Jesus Christ. Her head is tilted and eyes uplifted, looking either at the cross or up to heaven. Her hands are clasped in prayer. The overall composition is dark, with a light somewhere to the left illuminating her right side. Mary's expression is serene and contemplative rather than distressed.
Make your home a cathedral - where the Lord's Passion is continually contemplated - with Virgem Dolorosa.

The portrait shows differently depending on the amount of light. It has become one of my favorite Mary portrayals. I bought the canvas wrap choice.
